Entry from: Ban Khon, Lao Peoples Dem Rep Entry Title: "Life Among Si Phan Don" Entry: "Imagine a cluster of 4000 islets and islands strewn across the murky brown waters of the Mekong delta in southern Laos, of which only 33 are inhabited (smallest is Don Xang which has five families), and a community of easy-going, sarong-clad villagers walking around - this is the tranquil archipelago of Si Phan Don (also known the '4000 Islands'). Si Phan Don is named after the ex-prime minister of Laos, Khamtai Siphandon, who currently resides on the largest island, Don Khong. We stayed on Don Khon (not to be confused with Don Khong) immediately across the waters from Cambodia, on which electricity was only wired a couple years ago and can now thankfully provide either fans or air conditioning for us soft tourists not used to the heat and humidity. When the villagers are not involved in the tourist trade, many can be seen on the waters of the Mekong checking their fishing nets or tending to their rice crops among the emerald rice paddies that can be found in the interior of the islets. We stayed at a beautiful traditional wood and rattan cabana with our own veranda perched on a shore of the Mekong, overlooking the slow moving delta waters and onwards across to the adjacent palm covered island of Don Det, a ...
